The Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents, (“the Apostille Convention”) is an international treaty drafted by the Hague Conference on Private International Law. The Apostille Convention specifies the requirements through which a document issued in one of the signatory countries (South Africa being one of them) can be certified for legal purposes and used in all other signatory countries. The certification is called an apostille. The apostille does not give information on the content of the underlying document, rather it certifies the signature, capacity of the signatory and correctness of the seal or stamp on the document. The apostille is done in Pretoria at the Department of Foreign Affairs by EasyApostille on behalf of applicants.
Costs vary depending on the foreign Embassy / Consulate. The price charged by the foreign Embassy / Consulate is usually R 550 per document submitted. The foreign Embassy / Consulate will take 2 days to finalise the authentication.
Drop documents at the EasyApostille office in Sandton, arrange for collection and delivery in Johannesburg or courier the documents from anywhere in the world.
